ECall is a pan-European system of emergency calls. This system must be installed in vehicles and allows it to be made an emergency call whenever detected an accident.

According to ANACOM, the system uses the European emergency number structures, enabling interoperability throughout the European Union.

Speaking to Lusa, Jorge Gomes, Secretary of State for Internal Affairs, He said that the eCall system will allow reduce the time between the occurrence of the road accident and the arrival of emergency medical services at local, since the technology installed in the vehicle provides direct and automated access to emergency line 112 and precise location of the accident and immediate. Jorge Gomes also highlights the fact that Portugal is at the forefront of the installation of this "new" platform. This system is already in operation in the Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden and Finland.

The eCall system has to be compulsorily installed on all new models of passenger cars and commercial for sale in the European Union from 31 March 2018.
